A Memoir of the
California Gold Rush
This memoir is an authentic record of one man's experiences during
the California gold rush of 1849. The author recounts a long sea-voyage
from New York to California, his experiences in Panama and California,
and a dangerous journey across the Isthmus of Tehuantepec in Mexico. His
story includes vivid descriptions of the southern coast of Chile, the unruly
behavior of the immigrants in Panama and California, the Sacramento flood
of 1850, and the effects of cholera in southern Mexico.
