Lois Marie Gibbs first experienced the impact of environmental injustice
when, as a resident of Love Canal, NY, her two children were poisoned by
toxic wastes. Over the past 15 years she has emerged as a leader of the
environmental justice movement and is a founder of the Citizens Clearinghouse
for Hazardous Waste, which works with over 7,000 grassroots groups. Her
vision is to bring together environmental, public health, and economic
issuses crossing class, race, and gender lines to rebuild democracy from
the bottom up.
