Learning to estimate likelihoods

How can you learn to calculate likelihood estimates? Let's take the special case of dying from a disease.

If you know the base rate of a disease in the general population and the conditional probability that individuals with that disease die because of it, you can calculate the likelihood of any one individual dying from the disease as:

base rate X conditional probability = chance of death
