Conditional probabilityBut the actual chance of dying from cardiovascular disease (CVD) is not the same for all age groups. Atherosclerosis, the major disease of the blood vessels, takes many years to develop and thus is more likely to kill older people. If we take age into consideration, we find that only about 150,000 of the 225 million Americans under age 65 die each year from CVD, while 760,000 of the 25 million Americans over age 65 die from the disease. That means that, in any year, the conditional probability of dying from CVD, given that you are under age 65, is only 0.07%, while the conditional probability of dying from CVD, given that you are over age 65, is 3%. |
