Expressing Emotion Module Map

Purpose  To examine facial expressions and the underlying nonverbal messages they may convey.

Summary  Through a series of simulations and exercises, this module illustrates the facial movements associated with six primary affects: happiness, sadness, surprise, fear, anger, and disgust. Students manipulate the facial expressions of a schematic face to learn the basic cues associated with some primary affects. Manipulations of a more human face demonstrate more subtle and complex facial expressions.
