Schematic facial codeBy now you should be familiar with the overall facial expressions associated with the six primary affects. But to help you to distinguish and remember them, we'll go through the expressions one more time, reducing them to their simplest possible representation by using a schematic face similar to the "happy face" symbol.Remember that the emotional message is sent primarily by the position of the eyebrows, the shape of the eyes and mouth, and to a lesser extent the wrinkles around the eyes, mouth, and nose. That means the expressions can be illustrated quite well with a schematic face consisting only of eyebrows, eyes, and mouth (except for disgust, which requires the "nose wrinkle"). |
