Summary1. Neurons are classified according to their function as sensory neurons, motor neurons, or interneurons.2. Despite great diversity of form, neurons have four main parts: a cell body (soma), many dendrites, one or more axons, and axon terminals. 3. When a neuron is stimulated, it responds by sending an electrical impulse (called the action potential) along its axon. This is axonal conduction, or "firing." 4. The impulse is produced by a complex sequence of changes in the cell membrane, allowing sodium ions to flow into one part of the axon after another. |
